Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which typically appears during the first three years of life. Autism affects the way the brain processes information and prevents the individuals from properly understanding, learn, speak and behave like other normally developed. Child with autism may look like any other normal child but has distinctive and unusual behaviours and speech patterns.
Signs of Autism:
- Does not respond to his/her name.
- Avoids eye contact.
- Difficulty in mixing and playing with other children.
- Inappropriate laughing & giggling.
- Obsessions to objects.
- Appears to be hyperactive.
- Does not point with index finger to indicate.
- Repeats or echo’s words, questions and has meaningless self talk.
- Display good rote memory for rhymes, commercial jingles, routes.
- Resistance to changes in routines.
- No understanding of fear and real dangers.
- Not respond to normal teaching methods.
Some facts:
- 80% of those affected by autism are boys.
- There is no miracle drug that cures autism.
- The incidence of autism is growing at a steep rate. Current epidemiological studies indicate that at least 1 child in every 68 newborns has ASD (Autism).
- Autism is not a western disorder, it occurs in all parts of India, irrespective of background, religion or class.
Therapies:
There is no single form of ongoing therapy that would be considered to meet the demands of different cases of Autism. A combination of early intervention, special education & family support helps individuals with autism to lead more normal lives.
